City of Fairfield WWTP
A part of Fairfield Sustains, the City of Fairfield’s plan to pursue renewable energy initiatives and efficiency projects which City Council adopted in 2024, this solar installation is the City’s first renewable energy project. The 1.5 MW-dc, five-acre ground mount solar array is positioned next to its wastewater treatment plant. The solar panels will provide about 65% of the electricity needed to power the utility. The wastewater treatment plant was chosen as the first energy project, in part, because it’s the single largest energy user of all the city’s facilities. With electric rates doubling in the last four years, the city expects to save $2.5 million over the solar array’s 30-year life expectancy. The solar array will help Fairfield keep sewer rates stable.
